The 149th Anniversary Reenactment of the Battle of Gettysburg took place at the Redding Farm on July 6-8, 2012. The Gettysburg Anniversary Committee did a fine job coordinating events and programs, while re-enactors, living historians, and visitors battled crushing heat and humidity throughout the weekend.
This year, FGC members took it upon themselves to re-organize the formal “Meet the Generals” presentations in into three different sessions. Separate coverage was provided of the events of the first, second and third day of the Battle of Gettysburg. General Meade served as emcee for each of the sessions, followed by presentations made by the officers who had a major role during that particular day of battle. Visitors, Civil War historians, and journalists enjoyed all three sessions. The dialogue between Generals Meade and Sickles proved to be quite informative and entertaining.
In addition, General Hancock delivered two one-hour presentations covering his background, involvement and battlefield experience during the events of the three-day battle. Both sessions were well received by all.
While the Gettysburg commanders were speaking either in Tent 1 or 2, Generals Grant, Sherman, and Hartranft stayed in camp to speak to the countless visitors that came through our campsite.
At the FGC’s annual meeting held on Saturday, July 7th, all members extended their gratitude and thanks to Roxanne Vaughn, who cooked and provided delicious meals to members throughout the extremely hot weekend.
